Flawed business model, nobody is going to pay $10 per year to list their profile when they can do it for free on a social networking site and they keep your info online for life.
If they gave you 5 years registration for $10 it might... might take off.

I disagree.
I have a portfolio.
Everyone knows that new GTLD's need time 1 or 2 years or more to
get really through (unless it are premium domains).

If all that is needed is time, I guess it's time to invest in .pro .coop .museum .aero .travel etc

Don't count on it. You might as well invest in .mobi .
Better yet - Drop the .tel / .mobi and go for IDN... There is money to be made in the near future.
Agreed. Otherwise offer a customizable page offering information from your social sites (last tweet, last digg, favorites... etc). The bland purple page listing just telephone numbers and your URL is a turn off. Why tell someone your .TEL domain when they can just go to your .COM and see all the same information and more?

I don't really get the point of .tel and I believe it will vanish over time

Your missing the point .tel allows you to host contact information directly in the DNS, which is more accessible. Nowadays people always have their phones, pdas you name it and having a .tel gives you another way to communicate with others. Sure you can create a website but who wants to go through that mess, the cost, compatibility issues, etc. Time is money so what is a quick way to get your information in a short amount of time. Now there are websites that are developing tools to expand the use of the .tel as well as to allow you to import/export information.
As of now .tel is in its infancy so give it time and you will see it will grow but what do you expect when there are many new & upcoming domains. The developers are constantly making updates to the control panel and more businesses are using it. Yahoo and many other businesses already have their .tel.
I like the .tel because they are uniformed in appearance and is geared for mobile applications. When you purchase a .tel you already have a site. You just need to log into the panel and add your content. It is easy to maintain as well as to update your content information. It does not get any easier than that. I look at it as a virtual business card thats available all the time.

If you want to succeed in domaining, I advise that you stay away from subprime TLDs.
Today the action is in .com/ccTLDs.
.tel and siblings are the ghetto.
People don't care about the 'advanced' technical stuff like having data stored in the DNS.
What they can see is that site builder tools available on the market are much better than the cookie-cutter telnic template. What kind of business card is .tel, you have to cope with the overwhelming telnic branding and you can't even put your own logo on it ?

To succeed in domaining IMHO you need to be open to all types of domains not just .coms ccTLDs. With the exception of .com's, whose to say one domain is better than others. As for the telnic branding, like I said its new, it is constantly changing so yea it is possible that logos and other things will be implemented. You now can add advertisements to the .tel's so I don't see why you can not change the logo in the near future. I agree, people might not care about the technical end of .tel but that is why I say that people want it simple. Remember the old saying "Keep It Short & Simple" (KISS), well your not going to get any simpler than the .tels control panel. I agree, you are not going to satisfy everyone's interest but then again that goes for the same for mobile development. I don't work for telnic nor do I promote or make money from .tels. I like that the .tel is the only domain with this technology.

I know I am consistently unable to think 'outside the box', I prefer to invest in TLDs that make money. The bottom line is, how do you monetize them ?

I am not looking to argue but I would like to show some positive aspects of .tel. I am not saying that you are narrow minded either. Its obvious that you have no interest in the .tel which is fine but I would not dismiss it so soon. I already noted that you can include advertisements, links and so on. Btw, any reason why you would think that .tel would not be embraced by end-users?

My mistake, Yahoo has filed a complaint against Spanish blogger David Blanco Ramos for the bad faith registration of the Yahoo.tel domain name.
Although Google, myspace, facebook, Cisco, Microsoft, Forbes & Bloomberg have .tel. You can check the Bloomberg video @ http://www.telnic.org/tel-bloomberg.html

the main reason the big companies went for .tel was preventing "cybersquatting". With all or at least most of the new gTLDs coming up, this will be the same case. Companies are "forced" to register... I think in the beginning companies will register in the new gTLDs their TM, after a while they will become more selective and drop the rest...
