THE world's internet domain name regulator has formally chosen IT security guru Rod Beckstrom as its new chief executive to replace the retiring Paul Twomey.

The selection of Mr Beckstrom, whose appointment was first reported in The Australian, was finalised in Sydney this week where Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) officials are meeting.

Mr Beckstrom said his first goal would be to meet with the many working groups and stakeholder or "tribes" within ICANN. He also said that he planned to take a close look at ICANN's organisational plan to see what was "on track and what wasn’t on track.”

ICANN's board chairman Peter Dengate Thrush said Mr Beckstrom has "the strong personal and technical background that ICANN needs as we enter a period of unprecedented growth and change for the internet".

maybe he can see how stupid gTLDs are and stop the process.

Let's wait for the official statement from Rod Beckstrom about his plan and the road ahead.

Is that the role if ICANN? Sounds like he's halfway to becoming a politician...

we can always send twitter notices. @RodBeckstrom

I smell a raise in renewal fees

The head of icann earns $800,000/y in wages, doesn't he ?
No doubt Internet governance is serious business but icannn hardly looks like a not for profit outfit.

the possible talk of renwals increase...reminds of the fable about the goose that laid the golden egg....

Well, being a Not for Profit, every time their revenue goes up they have to look at ever more ingenious ways of jacking up their costs. That's how it works!

Please yes. We're all going to pay for the greed of a few...
