Hello

I was wondering what some of the benfits may be for an enduser (or any one else) to purchase a second domain for an already exsisting site.

Thanks for any insight anyone might be able to give on this.

They could expand on the site making it better if it is in their niche.

If you can find someone who is passionate about what the site is about they could make it extremely lucrative with the right mentoring (hence you could also get consulting fees if you help them expand on the site).

Example:

Main name: Sheds.com

no links out to the other names/sites.

buy also:

outdoorsheds.com
woodensheds.com
metalsheds.com
gardensheds.com
somethingsheds.com

make mini sites of each niche category.
Make sure all links in the mini sites are deep linked to products or category pages on main site (sheds.com).

This creates a great " seo net" for the SERPS and creates stronger rank for sheds.com with all the keyword domains linking (deep or ortherwise) to the main site.

or to make it really simple,
just have woodensheds.com (and other names) redirect to sheds.com.
The only benefit is capturing the visitor who uses direct navigation.
no seo benefits.

:D

Thanks for the insight everyone. What is the best way to explain this to an end user who asks the question "why should I buy that domain, when I already have this one?"

Cursal hit some very good points with that.

Also, if you're selling something then you get that "advertising space" preventing someone else from getting it.

Perhaps something like these arguments:
Purchasing domain names that can generate direct traffic to an existing website can generate income for any business and increase market share advantage. When someone types in a domain name, he or she will be directed to that location/web address. The more domain names you may have forwarded to your website, the more traffic flow your website receives, consequently more revenue.

Buying the right domain names, you can control your product category totally and Branding, thus giving you the unique & true edge.

This name receives natural type-in traffic from folks looking for either your website or the particular subject (sic) so it makes sense that you should own this name. You then could redirect that traffic to your own site.

Because of the increased sales leads owning this domain name would bring you, I thought you might be interested.

Hey, best of luck.
