Best Software for E-Commerce?

Can anyone tell me what the best software is, to develop an e-commerce site?

I'm looking for something that is quite customisable, to avoid a generic look.

I am very experienced in graphic design and image/logo creation, using mainly Photoshop and Illustrator, but have little experience with HTML.

Thanks Gregr. Have you also any recommendations on general web development software. Dreamweaver is a bit too pricey for me. For instance is NetObjects Fusion any good? I'm new to all this if you hadn't already guessed.

I use FrontPage but my programmers just use a text editor.

I've used NetObjects Fusion since version 1.0. I was part of the development team back in the day, too. I develop all of my sites with it. I still use 4.0, so I haven't tested out the most recent versions, yet. I think it's great. Very easy interface and powerful features. Personally, I only use it to add text and place graphics. I feel it is the most accurate WYSIWYG editor. It builds nice, clean tables and I rarely have design issues with it.

I agree that oscommerce is an excellent shopping cart. Lots of features, supportive community, and yes, it's free. There's a slight learning curve, but overall, a very good solution. I'm actually developing a site using it. It's only in the beginning stages, but you can check it out at http://www.isellcomics.com/shop

Thank you. I found a host who gives you free software, including NetObjects, when you sign up so I think I'll give them a go.

If you decide to learn HTML, I suggest you give "Macromedia Homesite 5" a try. There is a demo I believe, so you can see what its like. I find the best out of many. You have to understand html to use it though. Its almost like notepad, but way!!!! better. I also have Dreamweaver4, but don't like it very much.

I use DreamWeaver for internet stuff, FrontPage only for Intranet development because of it's problem generating its own code which can mess up if loaded onto a server without MS IIS. Its ok if just used for static html but problems start when using its own webots etc.... just a thought for internet development

Unless your site is excessively database-driven, handcoding your HTML renders you the exact control over page layout literally to the pixel.
