.ca drops...

Just wondering what this means.. I was trying to get a dropping .ca I use Pool and SiberName... It dropped yesterday, and I did not get notification that either place got the domain, so I figured that neither place got it... I check it today and see it is a Pool parked page... and the whois says:

This domain was registered using the Pool.com backorder service. For more information please visit http://www.pool.com

Why did this not go to auction? Did they screw us over or am I over reacting??

OK, this is strange, I just got an email from Pool saying that they got the domain on my behalf??? I must have been the only bidder? Strange, but I am happy about that...

I'm a little weary given the reviews I've read about them.
Has anyone else used pool for .ca's? I might have to start hedging my bets and start using them if there's a name I really want.

check it today and see it is a Pool parked page... and the whois says:

If pool "won" the drop, and you backordered it from Pool, you either own it or you are in a auction for it. You should just just wait and keep checking your account. If you are the only backorderer, you'll get a letter from cira.ca and you'll need to transfer it to pool or your .ca registrar. Pool has to register it or have one of their resellers register it so it doesn't drop. Don't worry about the renewal update. That is for your benefit. First, they secure it by renewing it. That way they can "give" it to you, since you were the only person to request it.

Has anyone else used pool for .ca's?

I have backordered a few .ca's but they don't get much traffic or revenue.

Thanks Bob... This is not the way it has worked for me when getting back-ordered .coms so I was a little leary...

I still find it strange, but I hope this is good, the domain still has Pool's whois info even though they emailed me saying I got the domain, and I did not get any notice from cira or the registrar yet so that concerns me, but they were more than happy to take my $60 immediately ... :bowl:

companies are just realizing that premium names are too good to let them go for $60 so if they like the name they will find a way to keep it adding fake bidders on their behalf or other solutions.
Tell me, now that we see ccTLDs go for 300K (Blackjack.de) who would give you Blackjack.ca for $60?
That`s just an example.......what was the name you were after anyway?

Good point, if blackjack.de is worth 300k, what is blackjack.ca worth?
Canada has about 30M population vs. 80M in Germany, both countries are similarly affluent, so maybe just under half the value? The .de extension is second to .com in total registrations, which is strange given Germany's population - maybe they are just more advanced in all things internet than Canadians?

Yeah, with other registrars, the domain is usually in my possession within a couple of days.

It just takes a really long time for the process to go through, and, you have to email them with DNS changes for the first 30 days, so that sucks, takes about 1 week for the dns changes to take place...

Yeah, I try to time it just right - but I can always expect a bunch of emails dated exactly 1:45 telling me I've been outbid...

I scanned through the list and didn't see any great ones, unless there are some getting traffic. A few good ones I noticed were lance.ca, groupe.ca, cite.ca Most of them were crap or would have to be developped and branded (not obvious type-ins). Less than a year ago there were usually some good one word names in every drop, now I think the quality will continue to drop.

OK not to be a shit disturber but what makes these good choices?? Teri.ca maybe but more commonly terri or terry. Lance.ca is good but truthfully I've only ever had one person in 6 years come looking for a name domain.

The rest I can't see any use for. Not one of these domains was on my list. I did bid for:
cellularservice.ca 262k $5* (*overture traffic/advertiser bids)
desktopcomputer.ca 247k $10
womensapparel.ca 153k .48
and obtained all the above. In addition I bid on lasvegascasinos.ca (I own the singular) but lost it.

There were 5 others picked up via pool that I' just waiting to see whether it's a single catch or an auction but at least I know I'm in on the final results.

Please don't anyone take this as a personal insult I'm genuinely interested in why people pick the domains they do. I've often scratched my head after the drops wondering what people are thinking to buy the domains they do????:nono:

'cellular service' might actually be 'cell phone service' or 'cellular phone service' in overture. Hard to say how many people actually type in 'cellular service' because sometimes overture will expand on some words. When I type that term in I get 262k showing for 'cellular phone service'.
But they are still good keywords.

I can't believe how many people use the word 'apparel' in their searches. lol

desktopcomputer is a nice snag to seo for keywords.

How high did the bids go for these and lasvegascasinos?

I mentioned three names before that I thought were good, not great, but worth more than reg fee. Lance is a short one word person's name, easy to spell, could be used for branding a new website. Groupe is the french word for group. Cite is a french word for city. People forget that almost one third of Canada speaks french (near 10 million people) and they are using .ca in their searches as much as or even more than english Canadians. I have had more luck finding good one and two word keywords in french than in english, probably because most people aren't looking for them. the problem is that french ppc doesn't pay as well as english, but I think that will change over time as advertisers become more savvy.

I've seen a few .ca go in drops that don't look great but actually have some traffic via backlinks or search listings.

In .ca I usually look for commercial keywords that show up in overture results, so then you know you are buying terms that people are actually searching for, which makes it easier to monetize your .ca domains. Preferably the keywords also have high paying ppc ads. I don't think one word domains in .ca are necessarily great, the words need to have some commercial angle to as many people as possible to make them worth more, or extreme branding potential.

I'm always interested too in why people buy or reg certain .ca names.

Correct me if I am wrong - but I believe these are French for Group and City - good domain names.

re: Pool - I 'feel' their service is questionable at best. Phantom bidders? Lack of clarity and communication on domain backordering process from start to finish. Slow service. If you want to pay the price (artifically inflated or not), they are fairly good at catching names.

I look @ catching names like a I do my portfolio - diversification.

Try multiple backorder service sites and don't just rely on 1 faint hope.

I never said these were premium or anything, otherwise I would have continued bidding after $50 or so... I am not going to actually tell which ones I am seriously after now, am i??

Also, I am confident that .ca names are going to increase in value in the next 3-5 years so I ask myself, what would a name like this in .com have been worth say, 5 years ago? And what are they worth today? All of those I mentioned would be money makers, I think...
