im being asked for about $180 from a crappy offshore registrar that pool stuck me with who never sent any expiration notices. yes, it's my fault and noone elses that the domain expired, but...

just wondering if registrars are free to charge whatever they want, or if its supposed to be regulated.

thanks

The fee charged against the registrant who fails to renew an expired domain after a second notice/reminder would incorporate what the registrar is charged by respective registry ($40 for .org, .biz and .info, and should still technically be $85 for .com and .net).

I tend to agree that this "restore fee" should be significantly higher than that of normal registration; if not, what's the point of having an expiry date?

I say, what's the point of having a grace and redemption period. - I get tired of getting emails for renewals from 2 months before expiry to 2 months after.

If it expires, it should expire... that's my opinion.

We'll soon know upfront unless I'm reading this wrong

http://www.icann.org/registrars/eddp.htm
the following changes to the obligations in the RAA will apply beginning 21 December 2004. (These requirements retroactively apply to all existing domain name registrations beginning 21 June 2005.
3.7.5.5 If Registrar operates a website for domain name registration or renewal, details of Registrar's deletion and auto-renewal policies must be clearly displayed on the website.
3.7.5.6 If Registrar operates a website for domain registration or renewal, it should state, both at the time of registration and in a clear place on its website, any fee charged for the recovery of a domain name during the Redemption Grace Period.

Gandi claims that they don't allow REDEMPTION period pulls, period... -- is this a violation of ICANN agreements?

Call me crazy, but I suggest renewing your domain names before they expire.

That's why there's the email subject line and the delete button. :-D

But their sending notices ahead of time is only because people do forget. And
many of those who do forget may regret it.

I doubt there's no registrar that doesn't send advanced renewal notices.
