One thing many domain holders don't think about is that registration checks are not always limited to the first day.

The upcoming .AT changes are an interesting example. Existing domains may still be affected if registration data needs to be verified.

Has anyone dealt with a registry verification request on an older domain before? How was it handled?

I have hit this twice, once on a .at and once on a .de, and in neither case was age the trigger. A verification request is really an audit of what the registry already holds, so a domain can be fifteen years old and still get flagged because the holder name has a typo, the postal address is long gone, or a field that used to be optional has become mandatory.

The nic.at changes are a good example. From 1 October 2026 every existing .at domain needs a telephone number in the holder record, since NISG 2026 transposes NIS2 and puts completeness and accuracy of that data on the registry. Nothing goes out automatically, requests only reach holders whose stored data shows an anomaly. But once one arrives, cooperating is mandatory, and evidence that arrives late or never can end with the contract cancelled and the domain deleted.

So I keep the holder record identical to the ID document, use a phone number I actually answer, and where the domain sits with a registrar I route the evidence through them.
