Cancellation

A .eu domain that according to my records was due for renewal today has suddenly been notified to me as cancelled, and has gone from my GoDaddy account. Are the rules for .eu domains different from those from .coms etc, and are they due for renewal the previous day?

Does anyone know what might have happened?
