ok i am new to buying domains and thought that ovt was some what important to the domain name(and not manipulable) , since Ive signed up here(and elsewhere) I've learned that even the best can be swindled. With that Ive learned that ovt with or without ovt can manipulated. What Im asking and more so for the seniors is how to recognise those domains/stats which have been "played" with. I know there are lots of how too's on buying domains but as a newbie I have yet to find one on what to watch for(paranoia) . I would love comments or tips/articles/places/programs to help the paranoid.

If it sounds too good to be true .. it probably is. Use your head. Think ..."should this name get xxx uniques a day?" Use other tools, but more importantly, think!

OH Ive got that part down/sorta, problem is for newbies we dont always know how to recognise "too good to be true" I am way overwhelmed with the fact that i can see what people are searching for lol sad i know but you should see what I tagged as "good domains" a month ago hehe, I would post them but its really really bad.

There was a recent sale of a website which you've probably read about on here that made my paranoia a little worse. For some of us just paying 60$/100$/200$ is a lot of money to risk. I actually spent some money on some adult domains which were getting about 7k per month in traffic(according to sedo).... turns out it was crap traffic reffers from everything but porn lol live and learn. Those have now, after a google drop, fallen to 10 per day/maybe.

I know there should be warning signs for buying a site or domains, the elders seem to have grasped this. I am pleading for a top 10/20 things to watch for. Ie. buddy wants quick payment..., Stats arent quite up to date.. those two are easy but how to check for fake pr/ovt.

<rant>I have almost bought a few domains and it would have been nice to be able to ask someone(with no connection to the sale) if it was worth it or if it was with in the right price range.</rant>

btw I will show you the Domain Ive "cheated" Ovt with ext and without in a few days, I just realized how this works and how easaly this can be faked after I checked all my domains for links ovt, alexa,google, etc. Understand I didnt start out meaning to get ovt with ext, but some may.

Ive recently learned that it is very easy to take a domain without ovt+ext and make it show ovt with ext. I as a newbie that doesnt have access to past reports would pay for that. Sometime seeing past parking result, which arent always avaliable is a good thing.

Here is my method , well a couple of them anyhow.

When I find ovt. w/ext available to register, I watch the overture for 3 consecutive months to make sure it will sustain traffic, then I grab it. Yes I loose some to others finding it as well in the meantime, but over time I get a few and the domains produce consistant traffic and earnings that I do grab.

Secondly when I buy from someone I research every angle where the traffic may be coming from , as aactive said , "use your head" , ask yourself why would someone type this in? If its a typo then how popular is the site its a typo of? is it a flash in the pan site or have long term potential? If it is a linkpop domain then how good are those links are they good or crap links?

When buying ALWAYS ask for a 3 day traffic test , you can see where the traffic (every unique) comes from if its on your server, the IP addresses , countries , refering URL's etc...
