Carrier IQ is an spyware app that runs on more than 150 million cellphones. This app is automatically turned on by default. It's easy for iPhone and iPad users to turn it off but it's not so easy for Android phone users.
Video and blog post from Trevor Eckhart (developer):
FAQ: Behind the Carrier IQ rootkit controversy - Critics say Carrier IQ software surreptitiously gathers personal data from phones; Vendor, carriers say only service-related data is tracked
To turn off Carrier IQ:
Android users can't turn the Carrier IQ off. Trevor from the video above couldn't turn it off on his Android phone either. There's a button to close or end the app but it didn't work for him.

iPhone and iPad users can click Settings, General, About, and then scroll down to Diagnostics & Usage to check that they're not sending data to Apple. By default, the option should be turned off
