Just got this from Enom:

"Please be advsied that affective today, executive management has terminated the club drop affiliate/commission program. With the upcoming changes proposed by the Registry, if we develop a new commission program for auctions in the future, we will certainly let you know."

"............the Registry intends to hold their own auctions for domains dropping or offering a waitlist service."

Does that mean CLS is on its way ?

"Central Listing Service Update
In response to the market need for more orderly and efficient management of deleting domain name registrations, VeriSign is planning to launch the Central Listing Service in December 2005, subject to obtaining any necessary clearances and/or approvals. Timeline of events that are of importance to registrars are:

October 10: CLS Information and Instructions Released in Name Store SDK 3.2.0.2
October 13: SDK/CLS Review Webinar for Registrar Engineering Staff
November 2: CLS Business and Marketing Webinar"

Wow,

Talk about a monopoly.

I wonder how this will affect auction sites like GoDaddy.com's auction site TDnam.com.

Crazy how this game keeps changing.

Here is a quote I made in a different thread earlier today (about TM domains).

Here is a different twist on this topic.

I just learned if Verisign's new proposal is accepted.
Besides, the increase in the cost of domains and how
domains will drop, "site finder" will come back.

That means that Verisign will become the largest owner of typo TM domains.

Does that mean Verisign is stealing money from the TM owners?

There is a lot of money involved if Verisign gets there way.

Regarding the drop game, the profit is moving from Enom Drop Club, Snapnames and Pool to the former registrar and Verisign.

Unfortunately, it will be in the best interest - profitwise - for registrars to make
it difficult to renew good domains. Then, they will get 90% of the market value of your
domain.

I thought Verisign was making a lot of money from the registration and renewal of domains in the past.

If the proposed Verisign agreement is accepted, what Verisign made in the past
would be like pennies compared to avalanche of dollars coming their way.

Phooey. This doesn't appear to be an improvement over the current situation. We'll see how it plays out.

As we saw with WLS (and SiteFinder), not everything with Verisign is final :-)

Central Listing Service Update
Thank you to all who attended our Central Listing Service Webinars on October 13th and November 2nd. The Central Listing Service is pending ICANN review and clearance. We continue to work with ICANN to expedite its review of the service. Launch of the Central Listing Service is planned for approximately thirty (30) days after VeriSign receives clearance from ICANN. In the interim, the Operational, Testing and Evaluation environment will be open for testing in mid-December 2005. Please continue to refer to the Registrar Connections and the VeriSign web site for updates on the Central Listing Service.

I'm actually surprised this issue isn't a hot topic right now. I posted the following in another thread and figured I would bring them here because this is the actual related topic and should be of great conern to us all as domainers. ICANN needs to step up to the plate and propose an across the board solution to drops instead of letting everyone make up their own rules. The following is what I posted. And this is only a couple of ways the proposed solution could be manipulated.

Drops should be taken back to the way they were. Early bird gets the worm. I do agree on this one. And I'm not just speaking as a domainer. The current system is flawed and the proposed solution will turn out to be a huge mistake if allowed. A couple of huge holes is the system itself.

Legit buyer 1 placing a bid at one registry
Legit buyer 2 placing a bid at one registry
Fraud buyer 3 driving up legit buyers bids at another

Fraud buyer wins and doesn't pay. Registry then has to go to Legit buyer and request funds on a tainted auction. Or then has to re-auction and legit buyers may not be able to or interested in particpating again. Either way they propose to do it this will be happening right and left.

Another
Legit buyer 1 placing a bid at one registry
Legit buyer 2 placing a bid at one registry
Owner and recipient of a percentage of proceeds from auction drives the bid up at another.

Amen. If a name expires, it should be the registrars responsibility to delete it. Not hold onto it for their own benifit simply because they find it profitable. Now verisign has grasped this, and sees they are above the registrar and wants all the money for themselfs.

Great, "Club Drop" and Pool are on the way out, and I hope their services parish. Enom has been pissing me off for years charging a $160 redemption fee, and then hanging onto my name which is being parked on their PPC service generating them income from a name I purchased. Not to mention Pool who really is just a droplist bot that snags names with good overture scores, and auctions them for rediculous profits. A service that should have never been allowed in excistance to begin with.

I may be wrong, and have yet to fully grasp the CLS model. But atleast it's a shift in power to a higher authority. Registrars like Enom should not be allowed to profit from the good will of thier clientbase so frivolously.

If CLS is allowed all of the things you descibe you despise will be even worse. To put CLS in laymens terms Network Solutions will be auctioning off all expired names of the tld's they control. The bids will start at $0 above the regular registration cost at whatever registrar you are bidding from.

All registrars will be given the access to this service and provide it to their customers. Bids will all flow through Netsol. After a auction is over Netsol gets 10% of the auction proceeds and the remaining 90% stays with the registrar to do with as it sees fit. The idea is a portion goes to the previous owner but.. It's not a requirement.

Netsol in essense replaces the pool, snapnames, namewinner, yadayada models.. With the perception they are doing the world a favor by doing so. lmao Their main arguement is the queries are causing a strain on the registry only you don't hear them complaining about the "tasting" going on because they are making money from it.

Personally I have no problem with drop catching services. I think they should be able to do what they do. That was the great thing about it. No matter how much money you have you still had a chance at getting a good name. With CLS you can be guaranted you will never get a good name again without forking out a load of cash for it.

I for one believe that the dropcatching business in infested with sharks.
Still everyone seems to realize that the new policies are not registrant-friendly. Actually we will end up paying much more and domainers will basically get screwed in the process.

I think the drop business can be compared to the current real estate situation in the US.

A lot of amateurs who have no idea what they're doing are driving up the prices (in the drop aftermarket) hoping to strike gold.

Yes, there are a few sharks but I can count them using the fingers on my two hands. There are a lot more trigger happy amateurs and these guys will drive the bids into the sky for no good reason.

Word of easy money spreads fast, and it seems like what was once very easy is no more due to increased competition.

2 cents.

None of the things that might happen under CLS will benefit present domain owners.

Now, we have to be more careful about domains approaching the renewal date.

It is in the best interest of the registrars to make it difficult to renew the domain.
Or, to transfer them away just before the renewal date.

With the economy of scale effect helping Verisign to make more profit because
of the increased quantity of domain registrations and renewals. It is paradoxical
why they need to increase the domain registration cost up to $ 12. over a couple years.

My opinion is that Icann is just rolling over and letting Verisign do whatever
they want to do.

And, guess who is going to pay the price due to Icann's lack of a backbone?
