:rolleyes:I recently read about .cn domain registration grew by 18 % and now there are over 12 million .cn domain names and it is second in the table after .com.

3rd and 4th are .de and .net.

What do you think about this? Will .cn domain take over 1st spot from .com domain in next few years' time?

I read somewhere that .cn is the most popular extension choice by spammers. Perhaps it is a factor in its popularity but I'm sure not the only one.

No surprise here.

Germany (.de) has about 82 million people.
China (.cn) has about 1.3 billion people, or roughly 15 times the population of Germany.

It's no shock that an extension with 15 times the potential clients (and 15 times the people who may type in ".cn" over ".de") would have more registered domains.

.cn were free, now around 13c/yr for locals. That has a huge bearing on number of registrations.

Lets see what the 12 million number becomes when they bring the prices on par with .net or .de - 120,000 would be a guess.

.cn just used the .info paradigm to increase reg base, works in getting the numbers... not for anything else.

There is little twist:
同班.cn becomes 同班.中国

.cn is big. I really like numeric .cn names but they are tough to find among english speaking sellers.

There is a LOT of speculation invested in .cn
I get many emails daily, offering me the .cn equivalent of a .com/.net/.org - telling me that my business needs this domain to do well in China blah blah blah.

The local government is pushing .cn for their businesses, .com is secondary to them. Just a reminder, google and youtube are not in #1 spot in china. They patronize their own services and extension.

By the way, what is number 8 meant for chinese?

By the way, what is number 8 meant for chinese?

8 [ba:] is a lucky number because it sounds similar to the [fa:] (meaning RICH) in Chinese.

It is a big bubble, because of the 1 CNY (0.14 USD) policy.
