(.com.au) Australian Domain After Market from June 1

i saw this the other day also, its great news to hear if you have plenty of registered .com.au domains, its also good to hear for people that would like to acquire domains which have previously been registered. i know ill be looking at buying a few names, i wonder if owners will try and sell them for .com/.net prices :S

Yeah - i have a few hundred .com.au - so lucky that i may be able to unload some now.

I have been hanging to buy some names as well. For me, for the exact .com.au I am after, I would be willing to pay high $xx,xxx

Not sure what prices they will be, the market will set. Australian market is pretty small but the right domain can still make great $$.

Big question is what site do you think people will offer them for sale? Just the standard ones or will there be a particular .au aftermarket site.... Maybe we should build one ;)

wow a couple of hundred, seems pretty good. would you mind PMing me a list of domains which you will be willing to unload, ill most likely be interested in buying some as soon as the date comes around.

yeh im not sure how the market will go to begin with, especially seeing as you need to be an australian resident? or at least have an ABN. um im sure the domains will first begin to go through any of the major sites (if they make provision for them). though a domain name marketplace strictly for .com.au domains would be quite interesting to build.

I went to a seminar last night on how to sell your .com.au name
It was run by aecn.org
We were told that a .com.au is worth 1/200th of its dot com equivalent

On the other hand PPC earnings per click for a .com.au are 3 times what they are for a comparable .com

As for a marketplace there are plenty on sedo already

I am betting name.com.au start a names for sale board soon

There is nothing ( except paperwork and cash)to stop overseas investors obtaining an ABN
Interestingly kiwis can get an oz ABN by just asking

One last thought
All aboard for the LLL express
Leaving now
Stopping all stations until June 1st

1) I`m interested in any .com.au with traffic
2) before to jump on any LLL countdown, I would first ask to AUDA if and when they plan to release the second level otherwise you just may end up buying rubbish (and I remember in 2006 there were LL.com.au available at reg fee but I did not take them because of the third level

auDA have a *very* long way to go in order to properly open up the marketplace. What the original post omitted was that you have to wait 6 months before selling it! Oh and you also can't "register a domain name for the sole purpose of resale or transfer to a third party".

So before you jump in and think "oh yeah lets register a heap of .com.au's" - step back and read the fine print.

Joe: Was it worth it?

can nonaustralians buy them? last time i wanted one they wouldn't let me

Non Australians can buy but need to register an ABN to do so. I know a range of UK affiliate marketers in the space who operate .com.au sites from there.

simon - I didn't omit anything - as you see the link to the full details are in the first post. I personally don't care about holding names for 6 months and there is no way that they can enforce whether you just brought the name just to on sell. The fact that sales are possible at all with out all completing stat decs etc is great. It was such a hassle buying my first .com.au off someone 18 months ago, its was basically buying there business.

I wonder if boomerang is going to unload any of there 10,000+ premium .com.aus

I Sold Grandma - 1/200th wow. I would be keen to purchase at that rate. Somehow I don't believe it. Pizza.com.au would only be worth around 15k. I personally am willing to pay 100,000 AUD for a couple of names I want. So again the market will decide.

If anyone has some premium 1 word .com.au let me know or .com.au with traffic - also interested in, PM me.

Soj - whats you budget? what theme are you after? When I purchase a name, I have an idea for a site to go with it. Generally at this stage I am looking to buy names rather than sell them but everyone has there price.

imarketing: I completely agree - enforcement of the new auDA policies is almost impossible. Even today there is nothing to prevent you from changing the contact details.

I Sold Grandma: 1/200th seems a bit extreme - although, if you think about "todays prices" and factor in the volume of "type it in traffic", then its probably within the ballpark.

Yes Simon
I found it very informative
For example the "thought crime" of registering a domain name for the sole purpose of resale was explained
Firstly, compliance is normally only pursued after a complaint
Secondly the the "thought crime" provision and the 6 month rule are a compromise to those sections of the community who feared get rich quick schemes duping people and to try and maintain the current inegrity of the name space
If you have tried to monetize a DN for 6 months, and then decide to sell, you will satisfy the rules

Join can join AUDA yourself for about $20
Then you nominate for the consultative bodies
You can make submissions
I don't even know what a 3rd level is?
I do know that the LL com .aus were auctioned by auda about 3 years ago. I was outbid on many by a substantial amount
Those passed in were available at reg fee
They all went within days

Maybe pizza.com was underpriced
What multiple of PPC annual revenue are you prepared to pay?
Are you interested in .net.au generics with traffic

Yeah pizza.com could have been especially if the sale of pizza.net goes through for 1.15 or something.

Usually I develop sites, dont really park except before something is developed. The name itself is what would be of value but traffic and income is always nice. Therefore it would very on the domain. For me I focus mainly in the financial space therefore they are premium to me.

interested in .net.au generics - I assume you have optimised the .net.aus that get traffic as I cant imagine that there are type ins - let me know what you got and what you want?

simon johnson - just having the thought or plans to develop a name and then offloading it because you want to put your time and money into another project i think would nearly be a good enough reason to get around the buying domains for resale idea. Though if this area was moderated, then it would keep the value of domains down to a quite affordable state for end users/developers

imarketing - ill PM you with budget and areas ;)

G'day All,

The AUDA eligibility guidelines for .com.au require that when registering a .com.au domain name for your business it must be 'closely and substantially' connected to that business...

How are you then able to register a couple of hundred (or thousand) domain names?

Is this an area that is not usually regulated?

Daniel

G'day Daniel
See http://www.auda.org.au/policies/auda-2006-03/

If you have an ABN and you are a domainer then the following applies

4. DOMAIN NAMES REGISTERED FOR PURPOSE OF DOMAIN MONETISATION

4.1 It is acceptable to register domain names under the close and substantial connection rule for the explicit purpose of domain monetisation within the category “a service that the registrant provides”. The “service” being provided by a domainer is the service of providing users with information and advertising links about the subject matter of the domain name.

Joe: Funny you should mention becoming a member of auDA. They approved my membership at the last board meeting.

I also applied to get onto the "Names Policy Panel", but unfortunately I was unsuccessful. Perhaps I should not have ticked the box that said "Domainer" on the application form.

They want some diversity on the panel
Too many developers registrars etc
If you had said you were a mechanic or footy player or something out of the bue, you would have been a shoe in.

My slurred utter on the au seminar
is at http://www.utterz.com/~u-NTA2NjY2Ng/utt.php#uttNTA2NjY2Ng
You need sound and an interpreter

too many unrealistic prices though
the market wil stall unless people stop asking stupid prices
