Here's something that makes you wonder...

I back-ordered a domain that was expiring 10/10/04 at the big four services.
None of them captured the domain, so today I look it up to find out who
was the lucky registrar....wound up going to That Darn Name.
http://www.thatdarnname.com

What bothers me is that this registrar is doing nothing but catching drops
for Enom. I back-ordered this name at Enom.

So how do I know that when a registrar working for these services are
going to decide that they caught the name on their "own time", and just
keep it for themself.

It doesn't seem right.

Since it's an eNom registrar, if you could tell me the domain name in question, I'd be pleased to look it up. If thatdarnname got the domain, it should have been reported as acquired and gone through the process.

If that is the case, I can re-run the validation process which might resolve it. But before I do that, I'd like to look at our logs and see what might have happened.

There are circumstances when the validation process cannot be run. Either Verisign is down, having network problems, logins are being rejected, what have you. In these cases, we retry every hour or so.

This is one of those cases. I diagnosed the problem and got it to manually verify. We err on the side of caution, and even though the software says we got the name, we don't put it in auction or transfer it until we can verify at Verisign and be sure.

Some domains from 9/5 couldn't be verified until 10/5, for example. It's rare, but it happens. We keep trying until we can verify. I suspect that some drop-catchers might just give up on the verification, but I can't be sure. Surely none of the larger ones do, though.

Thanks Chris,
I got the email with confirmation that the domain was captured and registered
to me. I guess I was without my morning coffee and way to quick to jump to the
wrong conclusions :emba:

I hate getting false positives from registrars. Domwish told me they got quite a good domain once, which they ended up not getting.

How long should I wait before contacting Enom about backordered/captured names
that do not show up in my account, or show up for auction?

It's happened again, the domain was caught and registered on 10/17 but still no
emails or any confirmation from Enom that they got it?

It's a real pain in the *** when you can't trust the service your using to preform correctly.

PM me the name and I'll look into it.

As I've said elsewhere, there are some flaws in the way Verisign reports names and our system can't tell a false-negative from a real-negative, so I often have to go back and re-validate. I'm building an automated process to do this that should be online in a few days (read: I'm lazy. I don't like having to do things by hand. Ever.)

chris thanks for willing to look into things.

i have always wondered about the mysterious name deposit earlier this year where 5-10 names got dropped into my account from "problems" last october.

since i dont keep track of whether enom or an enom affiliated registrar actually got names i put in for is there a way enom can see of there are "mystery names" in the system anywhere?

We recently re-ran the validator for the month of September, exposed TWO new problems that I believe we've fixed, and just today I completed work on a new validation system that should resolve all known issues with Verisign. Alas, only time will tell if it works. I'll be watching very closely.
