I've set up a few websites with nothing more than a splash page to monitor traffic. Awstats shows a substantially larger amount of pages and hits?

For example, 10 uniques, but 15 pages/hits. :?:

How is this possible if there's only one actual PAGE on the domain?

Uniques are individual visits. Hits can be return visits by the same visitor, during that period. It can also be a direct pull of image via search engines.

For one, Awstats is complete garbage. From what I remember, they count bot hits as well (which are pointless in terms of unique visitor traffic).

Use Google Analytics.

No, bots are counted separately. It's far from garbage but each to their own ;)

My history with Awstats:

Setup a brand-new site and was surprised to see that I was getting about 40-50 uniques per day, but being a forum, wasn't getting any new members. I decided to install Google Analytics, and checked back at the end of the month.

Awstats total uniques for the month: 792
Google Analytics for the month: 6

Quite a discrepancy...
