This is the biggest day to date for the IDN '.com' rollout to the IANA WWW root servers.

At least (4) four of the BIG IDN '.com' tld's have passed the official ICANN string test evaluations.

Cyrillic(.ком) , Hebrew(.קום) ,Simplified Chinese(.公司), Japanese(.コム)

This means as soon as the winning Registries (1) sign the required ICANN contract agreement,

they can start the process of rolling out the new IDN.COM tld's to the web.

First they need to (2) show how their implementation infrastructure meets ICANN's guidelines (should not take long)

Second they will (3) apply to the IANA, Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, for IDN.COM root server delegation (approx. 30 day process)

Only three steps to go!

Japanese .コム will fail like all the other proposed gTLD's for sure.

Most if not all medium to small companies don't even use .jp, everyone is comfortable with .co.jp and even .ne.jp.

They've been embedded into cellphone buttons for as long as I can remember...

DW - So which cell phone company will be the first to promote the new Japanese [.コム] button? If I am a Japanese business

would I not cover all bases and acquire mycompany.コム ?

This seems logical if it becomes available and if it is easy to do.

Maybe this is more about change and adaptation.

You will see new cell phone buttons and options by all manufacturers too - marketing will lead the way.

.コム looks like a winner.

My point is, that if that had happened when IDN domains were first introduced, it would have been great news. Now, with the gTLDs around the corner, it's great news only for those that still believe in IDN.

The problem is , If CNNIC is permitted to delegate the .公司 TLD without following any standardized rules,

a internet black hole gets created in the internet DNS system.

While all of the new Versign .COM TLD's (Cyrillic(.ком) , Hebrew(.קום) , Japanese(.コム) ) will resolve correctly,

the Chinese TLD equivalent will drop users into some kind of Black Hole where typing 'IDN.COM' takes you to one

location and typing IDN.公司 takes you some place else. This is fragmentation of the Internet/DNS

System and certainly not what IDN's were designed to achieve.
