Where or how do sites like droplists.net and deleteddomains.com get the list of deleted domains and the total registered domains stats etc?

I've read the FAQ but it really doen't give detail on what the file(s) contain? It can't be just deleted domians if they are 500 mb each?

.com zone files are about 460MB. These are all the active domains.
There is no list with the deleted domains.
You will have to compare the two files and find the domains yourself.

Do these lists just contain domain names? You find deleted domains by comparing the lists, did you mean comparing an old and a new list? According to their faq:
The Zone files do not contain domain names which are on the following statuses:

* Registry Hold
* Registrar Hold
* PendingDelete
* RedemptionPeriod

How can you know if the domain is deleted or in a status like above?

How does the reverse ip work, like the one at www.whois.sc?
