Difference between deleting domains and expiring

What is the main difference between deleting domains and expiring or expired domains and deleted domains?

If I remember correctly:

Expiring is when you don't renew it. Your registrar will beg you to renew it but you won't. On the anniversary of your reg date, it expires and normally is under the control of the registrar and goes though the drop process.

A deleting domain is one that has expired and will be taking out of the registry - after it deletes (or drops) anyone can register it .

an expiring domain is one that you still can "manage" up until the actual date of expiration.

many registrars will still hold the domain in an "expired" state in your acccount for a certain number of days(approx. 30-45 days), to give you an opportunity to renew.

there is no begging involved, either you renew it or you don't

after that time the domain moves to "redemption" stage, at this point you can still reclaim the domain, but the fee is higher than regular renewal fee. for instance at enom it's $160.00

(Note: all registrars may not allow for a redemption period )

also, when your domain is in the redemption or expired status, it may also show in the "expiring and deleting domains" lists at places like namejet and snapnames.

this is where others can place backorders on these domains and if/when the domain drops/expires, the highest bidder wins.

(Note: many sub-par to high quality domains can no longer be hand registered after they drop, as most registrars have made partnerships/agreements with backorder services for those domains to be auctioned off, rather than going back to a first come-first serve basis.)

there are rare occassions when someone will win an auction, but not get the domain because the previous owner has paid to redeem the domain.

in those cases the winner bidder is re-imbursed or credited, if charged.
