Are directory sites worth developing? Can they be profitable?

If so do they need to be vertical directories or can they be general info directories?

If general directory sites are profitable to develop should it be a brandable name or one like websitedirectory.com

As a developer I sday directories are a dime a dozen right now.
Especially those that use that free directory script.
It's because of the massive amount of directories launched in the last 2 years that most directory links have lost power in the search engines.

Think of it this way.

When was the last time you did a search and one of the directory sites powered by phpMydirectory popped up?

For anything?

They are free to make but literally becoming worthless....
