I'm curious to know what other people think of the different domain auction sites that are out there. I've heard a lot of complaints about eBay simply due to the size of the site. Other sites have poor customer support. Which sites run domain auctions the best? What features do those sites have that you can't live without?

One thing I thought would be an improvement is to add tags to the auction item instead of being limited by categories. That would help the seller promote the domain more specifically and also make it easier for buyers to search out your domain name.

What do you think?

there are different sides to the "domain auction" model

side one > auctions on domain backorders

side two > forums and other venue/trade show auctions the seller initiated

imo and from what i've read of other domainers experiences

domain backorder auctions are pretty stable and reliable, though some still have minor customer service issues

seller initiated auctions, on various venues have the most issues.

the top issues are, receiving payment and acquiring possession of the domain.

where most of the sub-issues of payment and possession, involve customer service's ability to expedite and manage the transactions in a timely manner.

i won't get into rating which site or marketplace is best, because you can find that evidence in dnjournal or other domain news reports, by tallying recent sales and where they took place.

the trade show events are of a different caliber, because they offer more than just the domain auction. including networking opportunities, entertainment and guest speakers.
