Is there any reason we shouldn't allow users to get appraisals on domains they don't own?

I personally sometimes ask for appraisals from peers on domains I am thinking of buying and the results are useful information.

To me this seems like an old rule that could use some change.

any other opinions?

I think it protects the privacy of the actual domain owners, so it's a good rule.

I've thought before that this would be a welcome change! I personally don't see much of a problem with doing it, although there are probably going to be drawbacks, which other users may list below...! I say test it and if no one likes it, change back :)

rule change should be in exclusive forums only - add an exclusive appraisals section and allow appraisals on any domins, owned or not

The last thing we need is people appraising domains they don't own and then at a later date assuming they own that domain. It creates a lot of confusion.

I second that.

The use of peers is a good thing to bounce off someone you trust, as far as their judgement goes.

But I am seeing this forum littered with, not only non-owned domains, but flooded with those that most of us would deem sub-par.

And in regards to those not owned, in fairness to privacy, I would NOT want to tip my hand to indicate a name I am interested in or bidding on.

One of the most irritating aspects of this forum is seeing a member have no idea what they have, ask for an appraisal, and before that thread is done they are posting the name for sale and wanting offers.

Already there is too much abuse of this rule, old rule or not.

And lately, it seems like no matter what the name is that is being discussed someone jumps in the thread to let all know that they have an alternative extension, "I've to the .net. How much is that worth"

There would need to be strict enforcement of rules IF this was to change. I do not want to see a member or two litter the forum with one thread after another asking for appraisals.

But if you and the powers that be want a change, then there needs to be some rule changes as well.

I think strict time limits on when you can post needs to be enforced (which many rules and reported threads are not enforced).

To me, a one thread per 48 hours would be reasonable and limit the amount of BS one has to weed thru.

Some old rules are good rules.

And personally I would not want to see it changed.

And the "buddy system" seems to work out just fine in the regards to getting opinions from those you trust.

I can see the spam hitting my inbox already.

"11 people at DNForum.com have valued your domain xxx.com at $175 dollars. See the thread below

Please let me know if you want to sell, as I have the cash in my PayPal account for a quick purchase."

It's interesting that all responses so far are from exclusive members.

Maybe we just need an appraisal section in exclusive that won't get cluttered.

Are you prepared to handle any/all complains from domain owners?

Here is example for you ;)
Would you be happy if one of your domain, for example, LL.com is posted
for appraisal and we all say it's about only $30K since it has acronym of negative meaning
although it has tons of other positive meanings?

Although appraisals are just appraisals, when many agree with prices lower than
real owners view of domain value, real owners won't like it at all and will start complain.

As you said, you ask appraisals from your peers is all good because it's
hidden from public. Let's say you want to buy "This-domain dot com"...
You may want to ask your friends about it's value, but, I am sure you don't
want it be open on public forum, would you? ;)

Good points.

Plus, I would hate to be the one to have an auction ongoing at Sedo or Moniker,

and all of a sudden I see my domain being appraised while I have it on auction!

Agree, all good points.

Kinda reminds me why we have the rule.

I agree with this (I'm not worried that it'll happen with me but I can see it happening with others)

Plus, what's to stop someone from looking at a sales thread here then asking for an appraisal (or even person A posts it for sale and person B posts for an appraisal for them).

Also, what if the owner (non-DNF member) wants to sell it (to another non-DNF member) but someone posted an appraisal here? it could get messy and interfere with their sales.

I could see a lot of abuse with this.

I can see it in the exclusive section (non-Googled), though.

It has really been happening a lot lately. Very annoying.

Plus, DNF will have people joining just to get an appraisal and run with it to ebay talking about all the "expert" appraisals.

imo, nothing at all wrong wth appraising domains or sites which are non-owned. I always wondered why there was a rule against it?

So when you post a domain for sale...i am going to post it in the appraisal section to see what everyone else thinks before i make my bid.

Sounds like a great idea.

this old rule doesnt need any changing....

besides, appraisals are pretty much worthless when it comes to domains

this is a section of the forums i have always stayed away from and for a very good reason

I love it when appraisals in the $xx range end up selling in the thousands. Seriously, appraisals that are done by "fly by night" domainers mean nothing.
