You will no doubt be looking forward to next weeks report to get the Lowdown on Sedo's IDN.eu auction which included quite a few five figures sales, and the totally sales inventory ran into thousands.
Sorry, but if all this talk of IDN nauseates you, it is time to switch channels, cuz there is a lot more where that came from.
there is plenty of room for idn's in the domain world. this sale, in my opinion is a rarity. gardenfurniture.com doesn't even receive much traffic. i could only imagine the trickle that comes from germans typing in the geman language .de version. however, keep in mind that .asia, mobi and eu all had big sales initally too.
How would you know it doesn't receive much traffic? The keyword does have advertisers. The guy paid over 150k for the domain. Nobody would just "give" money to a lost cause. He knew from the ascii buy that he would do even better with the IDN.
You are absolutly correct...that's why I said the first MS (Microsoft) browser to be compatable. Since MS probably has 70% + market share in Asia, without them on board to support IDNs they never got off the ground so to speak. That all changed with IE7 but traffic should start to take off once the publicity and conversion to idn.idn takes effect sometime in 2010.
Opera browers, which have a HUGE market share in Russia and have been IDN compatable are the #1 reason everyone that owns top Russian IDNs are already smiling with their traffic and revenues.

people make stupid domain purchases all the time. just look at hotel-reservation.com. regged in 2008 and sold this year 215k. if thats not stupid, i don't know what is. props to the guys selling these for that much. i think i would feel like a total asshole asking for that kind of money. do you really think the people buying these are educated about domain prices? not likely.
I'd also like to know how one acquires the testicular fortitude to turn down a counter offer on a domain like this of 100k or 125k and hold out for more.

Probably don't have to sell too many sets of lawn furniture to pay the monthly "advertising" cost.
If its a business grossing a few million at a 10% profit this cost its cost is a fraction of 1% of sales
I would venture a guess their total advertising budget might be in the range of 5% of sales.
You can't hardly get squat on radio or print advertising exposure for $1,300 a month in any major city market.
This guy paid a good buck for the domains, but probably also got a good investment and ROI.
