Okay, I have a low-threshold of patience, when I'm watching a name that is in danger of being hijacked.

Here's the syndrome.

1. You're searching for a name, and you notice that its being sold by a domain name reseller.

2. You see the resellers website (via their e-mail address) is down, and checking the name, you see it had expired, and was recently caught in the drop.

3. Staring at the name, you realize two things:

#1. There's a GREAT chance that this name will drop
because the reseller obviously went out to lunch.
#2. There's the possibility that the name will be *ILLEGALLY*
hijacked because someone NOW has the domain name of
the administrator address.

Sigh.

What would you guys do? My first reaction is to try to make a public record somewhere of the domain name and its precarious situation. In the past, I've registered the admin address, and sat on it just to ensure a safe drop for the name (even if I never ended up getting the name).

What would you guys recommend? My pal has run a website for years, that he'd like to abbreviate, and the abbreviation was owned by this reseller who's clearly gone out of business. The name drops in December, and we're making plans to get the WLS when that comes about, but we also need to ensure a safe drop as a first priority.

Thoughts?

Sometimes I wish I had no morals because I know of a great domain that doesn't expire for several years, and isn't active. The admin email domain is available, and has been for a couple years!.

Stay strong, buddy (unless your playing miniclip snake.) I registered the admin for SECRETAGENT.COM last year 6 months before it dropped, tracked down the owner through winding and misleading contact information and false leads, --who then claimed he still wanted it, and watched helplessly as BuyDomains grabbed it out of my drop-catcher's hands with its own connections. What can you do? :)

I'm more concerned about losing out by someone else perpetrating fraudulent activity. My conscience is clean, and its a good feeling.

I could never do anything illegal. My conscience would eat me alive. :)

I also believe in something called Karma. I've seen it work many times. If you do something bad to someone, you'll get it in return. Maybe not that day, maybe not the next, but eventually. If do good things, the good karma comes back to you.

What's the domain? j/k I believe in karma too, although not literally, more like the payback is your conscience gnawing on you.

Doc, I am the official keeper of the Karma chips. Just for the record, that one
Karma chip I owed you was given to you last month. When, you ran that
"stop sign" and the tractor trailer slowed down before reaching the intersection.

I just checked. And, your acct is at zero. Please place one Karma chip into
your acct for a safety measure.

++++++++++++++++

I saw one like this too. I contacted the owner to try to buy the domain from her.

She ignored me, but she did manage to renew the domain for a few years to come.

But, the domain still has an email address that poses a security risk for the domain.

Although I would never steal the domain from her --by the same token I do not think it is my responsibility to be a free security consultant for every careless domain owner.

I made my "Warning" to the previous owner of SecretAgent.com, after my interest in buying the domain name was refused. He gave thanks (read: "get off my phone, how'd you find me?"), and I watched to see if he'd make the simple effort to change the address via NetSol in the coming weeks. Nothing. I lost interest after that.

BD now has SecretAgent.com since 7-29-03. They paid over $ 4,000 for it thru NW.

I wouldn't say that. In many ways it would be safer to use simply one email address.

The case to which I am referring involves an error, an email address that can be freely registered by anyone --to this day.

Exactly. I lost interest around March. I'd had already taken the Snap off and I saw it going into redemption by chance. I wasn't surprised when July rolled around. In fact, it was a relief that SnapNames didn't get it. I'd have lost my mind.

Well, BD is in the correct city to sell SecretAgent.com.
Washington, DC.

I would like to see an opinion on which email address to use for controlling your domains.

In my case, I prefer using my comcast email address since I don't think I would have
a problem compared to using my own server and domain address. I have a couple
great domains to use as an email address. But, for domain safety, I thought I would be
safer with Comcast.

Additionally, I would never use a free service. Since, OUR email address is the key to many of our domains.

What do you think is the best email solution to control your domains?
