Domain hijackings - Who, What & Where?

This seems to be the constant topic on most DN forums. The culprits seem to be many. So far the Nigerians are off the list.
Just like the Somali piracy is driven by economics, so is domain hijackings.
When we try to learn a thing or two about the hijackings, methods & preventions the politics come into play, the posts mysteriously disappear, and nothing is learned.
The term hijackings itself isn't so clear. I had a case of one of the major players in the industry grabbing one of my domains, offering me a consolation price of X,XXX and immediately reselling it for high XX,XXX.
