A thought provoking article! It's more likely that the person(s) who are eavesdropping are:

1. Websites with a name generation / whois script.
2. People in a position of trust at registrars.

Its less likely to be the companies that sell clickstream data. The whole process of recording / viewing the data (which is usually in aggregate anyway) takes far too long.

It will be interesting to see what comes to light over time.

I started hearing about this a few months ago on another forum. Now, I use a whois to check to see if a domain is available, or a domain tool. I wouldn't put it past any rrgistrar to do this.

One way to avoid it, be prepared to pay the registration fee when you see that it is available.

Very unethical IMO but it is a dog eat dog world out there.
