You are probably here because you want some useful tips on how to invest in domains. There are many things to watchout for:

1) Fraud
2) Price
3) Traffic
4) Referers
5) Revenue

Many people try to commit fraud when selling domains, although we wish everyone was ethical and moral in domain selling. It is a fact that many people get ripped off and have to go to court (that is the last thing you would want to do). Fraud happens in many ways, like for example......
someone posting traffic/revenue screenshots from another site, or the lowest of the low making their own traffic/revenue screenshots in a program like Photoshop. This happens everywhere and is one thing to be careful of when buying a domain.

The prices can sometimes be way off, sometimes you have to just say to yourself "This is to low, or this is to high". Sometimes when a price looks to good to be true, then it is to good to be true. You have to be careful of these people that say "I need the money ASAP". When a price is to high sometimes people fall in for it and take it, although they were ripped off and the seller made a wack of money. If you are purchasing a domain from a registar for register price, be sure to find easy to remember words, real words, pronouncable words, and catchy words. A good example and very hard to find domains are dictionary words. Open up a dictionary and pick any random word that suites the site you are looking for. These kinds of domains are especially good for search engine spiders.

The (real) traffic can make huge differences in the domain world. A change of 5000 uniques per month can boost a price up hundreds of dollars. Traffic can be made by advertising, search engines, services, marketing, etc.

The referers are sometimes brought to ones curiousity. Where traffic comes from is a big deal, because it could be due to advertising. Even though you could continue the advertising, it is a big deal if they do not tell you about this. Make sure to keep that in mind before purchasing a domain. I have seen many people get ripped off on traffic before, but they usual have never seen the referer list.

Revenue is where you price range of domains goes up and down. You have to think that if you keep a domain for say 1 year, at an average of $200 per month. The person selling the domain should sell for 8-10 months worth of revenue. Be sure that you know how the revenue is being made and if they have done anything special to boost revenue. A change of $100 month of revenue can boost domain prices well over the $x,xxx mark.

good article. It's indeed very important to know the origin of a site's traffic and revenue when buying a site.

Sorry
Just can't help myself
No offence intended, however
the original post is probably the worst advice ever posted here for investing in DNs
For example "the person selling the domain should sell for 8-10 months worth of revenue"

The 2 subsequent posts are only denoted by the similarity in mispelling the word "article"

Ok you are offended
Sorry
