The Domain Name Marketplace Indicators (DNMI) initiative publishes annual metrics to track the evolution of the global domain name marketplace. Launched in 2019, the project supports the outcome in ICANN's 2021–2025 Strategic Plan aiming for consumer confidence in the evolving domain name marketplace to remain strong, as measured by increasing domain name registrations and other indicators.
ICANN org developed the initiative in collaboration with a volunteer Advisory Panel and with guidance from an independent expert on domain name marketplace metrics. The current Version 1.1 schema comprises 16 active indicators organized into three categories: Robust Competition, Marketplace Stability, and Consumer Trust. These span dimensions such as registrant choice, domain adoption, service provider ecosystem openness, contractual compliance, and industry safeguards. Indicators are updated annually. The Domain Name Marketplace Indicators Schema and Taxonomy Guide [PDF] provides full definitions, calculation methodologies, and a glossary of terms.
Explore indicators by category:
Historical data for indicators that were part of the original Version 1.0 schema but are no longer actively maintained are available within the Archived Indicators section of each category page. All DNMI data is also available on the ICANN Open Data Platform at opendata.icann.org (registration required).
