It would be naive to believe that Verisign needs more money to provide a more stable service.
With economies of scale the price of domains should actually be decreasing, like bandwidth & hosting.
I understand Verisign is a capitalist venture and needs to make a profit after all. I have no problem with that. Verisign has been doing a good job IMO. However the price increases are unreasonable and clearly out of line with inflation or the cost of living.
Actually I resent ICANN as much as Verisign. They settled their lawsuit at our expense and they both profit from the deal. Why should they care ?
I don't mind paying the right price for a good service, that's why I am not using the cheapest registrars. However, I DO MIND footing the bill for their monopolist leanings.
Just for the record ICANN's motto:
Competition ? ICANN is in bed with Verisign. If they were really looking to foster a competitive environment the .com/.net would be run by Tucows/Denic today, for a lower price.
Consensus ? ICANN is a fairly transparent organization. However they hear more than they listen. They clearly ignore what the feeding hand (that is, us) wants and deserves.
They react more than they act, and the registerfly fiasco is a reminder that they will not act in your interest without considerable pressure.
Meanwhile Verisign are filling their pockets, just because they can. It's written in the contract. Remember, the contract that was unanimously opposed by domain owners, but approved anyway ?
