Can someone tell me why there are so few registrars? Is it very hard to get approved by ICANN? Do they turn down most applications?

There are about 130, I think.


reason 1)profit margin. Theres no money to be made selling domains for less than 2% profit, with risk of charge-backs etc...

There is also the initial cost - and programing and tecnical requirments, total cost can go over $150K

Compare to about $100 to becomeing a reseller or sub-reseller.
