a developer does not need access to your domain. He/she needs access to your hosting account.

Don't, be your own developer!
:)

Domain control is what is most important.

I did develop my sites - mainly buy and install scripts.
Add stuff - wordpress some directory scripts etc.

I don't see why I should not develop - any clues?

I think they missed the comma. :)

Yes, be your own devoloper. 100% control over everything and you don't need to split the spoils or pay for devolopment. :)

Make a full backup of your site before unleashing the developer into it (and he has nothing to do with your domain name). If anything goes wrong, revert to the backups pre-developer.

Not everybody can be a developer or take time to learn the ropes, so finding developers are a necessity. But it helps if you learn the ropes as well so you can communicate better with the designer/developer or at least be on an educated lookout if they're up to no good.

If you are going to let a developer loose on your website, then be careful about the access you give them. If they ask for CPanel, then its pretty much open slather... if you give them access to a mysql database then lock it down to only that particular one and create an account for them to use. That way you will minimise any risk.
