Jim Segrest, a former city planner and neighborhood association president, lives in a Butchertown house that dates to 1794. Most of his time at home is spent in the former slaves' quarters, in the basement. Downstairs in his office, surrounded by books and table lamps, he writes frequent letters to the editor.
