just to note. it would literally be 'stupid' of google [or any other search engine] to penalize [or reward] based on domain extension.

Agreed, but I think some people assume dot com names are looked up 1st in SE's since most appear in the top positions. If they only took into account dot com's have most other extensions beat 23 to 1 when it comes to amount of names registered. So it's only a given you'd have more appear in the the top positions.

Where dot com names have everyone beat is their "type-in" value. There is some room for discussion on whether this is "valuable" or not, but certainly there is some value to be "thought of" first....
