DotGay Domains- Soon To Be A Reality?

What exactly is the mindset behind creating a TLD that screams of segregation?
If there is one thing that is going to segregate the internet more than anything it is IDN. That is why I say the internet is about to become a very fractured and confusing place.

As I said, I think creating new extensions is a completely waste of time and money, and you can ask people, and you will find that they even don't know that .INFO exists, for example. Some time ago, I switched back again to .com domains and let all my other extensions expire because I think they will become useless.

...... Keywords, sold over again, in a new TLD that refreshes the namespace. So yes, flowers.gay will be bought by the same people who bought flowers.mobi and flowers.me

Actually with ".gay" that will not happen. A number of community relevant keyword domains such as hotel(s).gay or lawyer(s).gay will stay with the community and will be operated by the registry. These community domains will serve as third level registration basis and they will serve as directories for related .gay domains: Palm Springs based tonysbar.gay tagged with community keywords "bar, bars, nightlife" and "Palm Springs" will be listed at bar.gay, bars.gay, nightlife.gay if the location "Palm Springs" is choosen. In reality its a little more complex and serves two goals: The end user has added value and the domain owners have some exposure for their domains.

".info" is exactly why I invented ".berlin" and ".gay": It can be done much better then .info did it! And it's much easier if you have a very self aware and proud community. It's essential that the targeted community can use the TLD on a broad and daily basis. And you have to be able to reach the community. Thats why .metropolis and .gay will work. That's why .kids or .shop will be extremely difficulty.
Just because the previous new TLD's did not lived up to their full potential dosn't mean we should give up, right? We have the 1990 of TLD's. Imagine someone would have told you .com domains would be something very special in 1990. You would have laughed at him, right? 1990 had been simply to early for ".com". Yet whoever had been there in 1990 had free choice (over 99,9% of the generic keyword .coms had been available in 1990). It's 1990 again.

Well, at first I would say I consider .gay could become a gay porn related websites only, as long as the LGTB (lesbian, gay, transexual and bisexual) community is not only about being gay. But of course it sounds better .gay than .lgtb. But do really LGTB people need separate domains for separate businesses? I think they don't, LGTB community wants and looks for same opportunities in all the places, or at least it should. My main worry is that maybe .gay domains would be more like a ghetto inside the Net than a new opportunity.

Of course this is only a discussion, and I'm enjoying so much this topic.

Hello, I understand your concerns. ".gay" should NOT become a porn TLD. And about the "ghetto": Gay Bars, Gay Prides, Gay Tours or Gay TV Stations are existing. Does anyone call them "ghettos"? Nope. And ".gay" domains will be the entrance doors to these businesses. I give you one example: www.delta.com/gaytravel, or www.orbitz.com/gay. There is already a "gay" in the URL. Why not shortening the URL to orbitz.gay?

Some people in the LGBT community WANT to be out. ".gay" is a great way to do so.

If .gay is coming into play I want .woman :)

sooo dotgay will be the wets hollywood of the tld's?

Don't know why they haven't thought of .domain yet, shortened to .do :D

Are these characters allowed?

One wonders how many of you clowns are in the closet or gay-curious. Quite frankly you sound like a bunch of homophobic rednecks.

I am not gay, but rather openly "gay friendly." When I operated my magazine for high end real estate, architecture and interior design, I vigorously supported many gay causes: HIV-AIDS information & treatments, hospices, the gay press and the GLBT/LGBT community. I was rewarded for my efforts with increased awareness and reach for my magazine, advertising revenues and the respect of a grateful audience.

Clearly, you folks are clueless that the GLBT/LGBT demographic is perhaps the wealthiest per capita and most sophisticated of them all. Very high disposable income...and let's face it, superb taste!

So when you can only think of porn as the most probable use of a .gay extension, your ignorance screams. Is there not straight porn, but also shopping, social enterprise, travel, business, etc., you clods?

In fact, were it not for the porn industry, the VHS/Beta video market, and in fact the Internet would not be what it is today. How many of you know that the VHS v Betamax war was won by the porn industry's endorsement of VHS? It was porn that drove these technologies in the beginning. And if you want to see the most up-to-date web technologies, you only have to cruise the porn sites. Straight or gay. Animal or Anime.

And yep, if I want to see what's the latest implementation of online technology, I check them out...it's fun too! Some people sure do get up to kinky-weird shit! In High-Def! Flawlessly streamed!

Anyway, I'm getting off the subject.

Why shouldn't there be a .gay? I hate to rain on your [very] little parade, but there WILL be .christian, .muslim and from what I've read on this thread, .homophobe, .pinhead, and most probably: .broke.

Steve, I don't think anybody was being homophobic here. That's not the point.

Why not .lesbian then. But wait - a .lgtbt is more encompassing, because trans people would feel left out.

The point is that endless fragmentation of Internet namespace is going to foster chaos (IMO) and confusion. I just don't perceive the need for all these vanity extensions. Existing alternatives are shunned today.
Let's face it, we all know most of those TLDs will be utter failure. It's all déjà vu again. Who really benefits from them ?
Icann is opening a huge can of worms.

More to the point, do the people behind dotgay represent the gay community as a whole ? To put it differently, is there any demand within the community for a dedicated extension ?

I agree that .broke has a bright future :)

I don't think IDNs will cause confusion, they are going to help strengthen the internet and provide a long needed
service to the world community. The rest of the gTLD's yes I agree they are just going to muck things up.

It is about time that people that can't read or write English finally get domain names that have real meaning to them,
and that they can read and understand. What a novel idea!! ;)

If ICANN were to approve the .gay TLD, it would be used for gay porn more than anything else, which is why I dont think they'll get it.
