I am the king of stupid questions, i know, but has anyone ever grabbed a .edu or .gov name?

Of course, the .gov would probably come under eminement domain, but then they'd have to give you fair market value for it right (assuming there was no other litigation)?

I mean come on, if for profit guys like us accdentally let names expire, how much more so a volunteer at a college or moreso the world famously efficient government employee?

you can only entitled to use ".gov & .edu" if you proved that you are an governmental / educational bodies. i dont think these kind of domains can be grabbed by software.
