Yesterday I have received a low $xxx offer for the name from a company.

They are teaching pilots, testing airplanes, etc.

And of course, "we are a small company with small budget blah blah blah"...

Should I take the low $xxx?

Perhaps you can find how much they charge for the training and how small they are. But this is not too important IMO.

ElitePilots is a very good name. I would want $1,000 - 3,000, possibly more.

A trick I have tried a few times with success is say that this domain is for a bigger company with a bigger budget and suggest they reg the hyphenated version or the .net instead (they won't)

Huge question: what if I contacted them around 6 months before?

I have have offered them the domain name a while ago. I have asked them gently :" I will consider offers from the low five figures area"
They answer: $150 (potato...)

either stick with your price range or lower it

if there is more than one potential user, then wait for the next one.

Just think : if he is not sure to invest in additional domains WHY make an offer ??? (it is different if you approached him...)
Is he a domainer (individual or company) or an end user (School for pilots) ? I suppose the first one, maybe with an end user in his "pocket"

Just think that even the smallest profitable school for pilots will not hesitate to pay low x.xxx$ for a good name. And this is a nice one, I like it.

You are welcome ! Just imagine that to get a pilot license costs more than 5,000$ (in average) in most of the world, excluding costs such as fuel, etc. Only for training and that for a small Cessna... An average school for pilots for big planes, commercial planes, etc has to charge something between 40,000$ to 70,000$...
Calculate X 10 or 20 students per class per year, you got your answer. Of course elitepilots<dot>com is not the one and only domain suitable, but is really a good one.

I knew that a pilot license is a very expensive stuff, but the domain elitepilots is not a keyword name (rather a brandable). So even it is a good name, it wont receive mid-high $x,xxx offers...

Maybe developing a leadgen site would be the best idea than selling it for $1,000-3,000 (or for $150)...

Rob, I'm sorry you didn't sell it, but selling for so low prices is not a viable option.
(Unless you can sell every single domain you buy)
IMO they do have the money, but they can't see the value (or they doubt)
Make sure you follow up with them in a couple of months - perhaps they have changed their mind.
Let them know they could be losing a few customers who look them up at your domain, rather than their own. Nobody wants to lose potential customers.

I have offered them the domain around 6-7 months ago.
They have now replied (when I started this thread) with their $150 offer.

You will never be able to convince some people on the value of a domain name. They thought "for a couple hundred it would be nice to have", but they really don't value it commensurate with what a nice brandable like this is worth. They have to come to the realization on their own. When I first started, I would end up taking small offers like this after negotiations didn't go anywhere. Let me tell you from experience and hindsight, I regret taking low offers more than I regret losing some low XXX sales (even on some that I later dropped). I know what percentage of my domains sell each year and what I need to average to make a profit, and low XXX just doesn't cut it unless I am porfolio trimming to other domainers and ebayers. You'd be surprised how many of those lowball folks come back to you in the next year or two and pay asking price.
