EU law and restrictions on registering domain names

I am intrigued how certain domain registries within the EU are able to restrict the registration of domain names to nationals or residents of the particular country concerned. My understanding is that this is surely against EU law!

I would love to hear other peoples views and understanding on this question.

US is restricted also to not americans.
For EU it's not against the law. It's the same like why Europeans can move around Europe freely and search for a job in all other countries , can stay without problems in all European countries etc but other nationalities need special permission to do that.
It seems normal to me.

They didn't actually made the TLD for domainers but for their own business, economical reasons. Don't see any special problem with that.

I see it as a block on freedom of information and also a freedom of trade. Why can a Greek living in Greece not register a .fr for example? Why can a Britain living in Poland not register a .fr?

The law as applied by certain member states of the EU is restrictive and definately against European law.

The American .US is restricted yes, but then again they are not under the same laws as members of the European Union.

European Union is for EU only, they dont care if you live in US and cant
buy a .EU because your not part of it.

And also who cares if US law is different than the law of EU, since the specific result is the same. No registrations. But for every problem there is a solution.

You spend 500-1000 $ and you have either a corporation in Delaware in US or a LTD in UK and then you can register your domain.

Don't worry, there will always be a way of doing things legally.

No this is not contradictory wit EU law, Directives on information and Rome treaty on freedom of trade do not interfere into the national sphere of domain registration.
