Germany and the UK, some of the most open of European Registries, reflect this in the overwhelming number of registrations for their ccTLDs. At the opposite end of the scale, the French AFNIC Registry restricts even their own citizens in their ownership of Domains. As a result the .fr domain has less than 5% of the number of domains registered in Germany. France has a population of some 75% of that of Germany.

Country - Population - # Domains
Germany - 82,431,390 - 8,661,654
UK - 60,441,457 - 4,108,068
Italy - 58,103,033 - 1,047,205
...
France 60,656,178 361,051

Hi,
You are right, we are not ICANN for the moment. We thought about it, and for sure we need to become ICANN Accredited soon. But for the moment it makes no sence. Just to save 50 Cent per com Domain? We are accredited for the most European TLDs, there is our business, not the .com.

In terms of registration volumes .fr is much smaller, but looking at usage statistics, for example the number of pages indexed in Google, .fr is about the 9th largest namespace in the world. This would indicate it very well used just not highly speculated.

The only bigger ccTLDs are .de, .uk, .ca & .jp - Also .fr is the 3rd biggest ccTLd in europe.

With the obvious omission of the US which thinks .com is it's ccTLD that puts it in line with International GDP ranking, ignoring China of course!

UPDATE!
EurID, the .eu Registry thinks that they will register 2006 about 2.000.000 Domains.
Personally I think it is not enough.
