I'm not so sure .EU will be such a success in the long run.
Most people use OR .com OR their cctld.

From a domain-marketing point of view, .EU will be hyped to-the-moon, but I doubt it will be a massive success in 2-3 years from here.

By the way, look at all those fake TM-applications, if some would get accepted by EURid, it would put a tremendous shadow over this .EU-sunrise.

I don't know, but if I had know you could trademark SEX, I wouldn't have waited for the EU Sunrise! I would have bloody patented it as well, and then I could have charged royalties!!!

I am really curious to see how it's going to work.
If so many TMs around all these generics, then all the composite words (sexonline etc,jobsonline, ticketsonline, etickets, etc) could not be used by others than the owner of the TM. Are we going to see the owner of job.eu going to court and take all the other domains that have job inside them?

I think it's going to be a really mess at the end.
This also explains why many companies made 10-15 different companies or entities as registrars (which mean 15*10000=150k Euro ) to increase their chances of getting these top names.

The early users of .eu will be the European institutions themselves.
They have made it clear they will switch to the TLD as soon as the layground is ready.
Currently they use eu.int and subdomains of that name.

I think Eurid have made a huge mistake by not ruling to disallow registrations on trademarked generic words. As pointed out earlier, all these generic word TM's floating about are going to create legal wrangling for years to come whether it is over competing TM's for the same word/name or a specific TM preventing others from registering a domain containing that word. The generics have been so heavily trademarked that it is game over for .eu. The only ones to make real money out of this debacle are the registrars and Eurid.

if a word is protected as a Trademark, then it is valid, even if it is a fake trademark.

No, I think Freddy is on the money here. But don't forget you need to set up a company, and I think you can only go for one trade mark per company. for which there will be a substantial fee. There is also a high fee for the Sunrise Period. If you end up with a 1-2% success rate, it is not necessary the surefire Scam most people envisage, especially as it not clear yet what these things will fetch!

Well, if you employ a lawyer it is going to get expensive but it is not necessary. You just get the forms and fill them in.

how much applications do you see? I see 232, some are double.
Pick up the names of the applications and do a search in the Trademark Databases, PWC which is in charge to proof if the application and Trademark is valid will do the same!
You will find "sex" as a medical product, you will find "sex" as birdfood. You will find the most crazy things! Or simple picture trademarks!
if you would get the sex.eu, you would have a problem to setup a company that produces 3 packs of birdfood per week? Me not! I would like to do it!
Come on! Thats a legal work arround, we have seen that already during other sunrise. And it was discussed during the Eurid Presentation on the ICANN Meeting in Luxembourg.

Wow. Reading this thread is like bad deja vu.

How many of you remember the abuse of the .INFO Sunrise Period by trademark squatters?

The registry said that the problem was minimal. Then I did this study -- suggesting 15-25% of Sunrise Trademark applications were bogus. Eventually, the percentage turned out to be at least that high -- even higher for prime generics.
