So we've all seen the hyped up sales of dropping domains. Is it possible to harness this out of control money source? ... maybe

Experiment #1

Step 1. Find a decent .com with available extensions (.net, .org)

Step 2. Reg all extensions (.com, .net, .org)

Step 3. Cancel the .net and .org extensions so they will drop.

Step 4. Contact the wealthy new owners of the .net and .org and offer them a smoking deal on the .com

Whats wrong with this experiment? Will it work?

Do cancelled names drop or do they have to wait until expiry date+

Or you could delete the .net and .org and realise nobody has registered them or they arent interested in the .com because they have $10 to their name

Yes i beleive you have to wait 45 days or around there once you delete the domain before it becomes available to the public, I may be wrong

Chances are that if you find a .com, a .net and a .org all unregged that name doesn't carry much value in it

aldwin, that is EXACTLY my point. Domains that drop mysteriously carry a greater value than unregged domains.

I have musictitles.net I can't sell for $60.
Let it drop and someone will book it for $300

The people bidding the big bucks usually don't visit dnforum regularly.
Also, they don't want to deal with one domain here and one domain there.

When, they are bidding at SN or other sites, they are bidding on a number
of names.

If it drops, they know it has clear title.

And, yes. The process of the auction system makes them bid higher or lose
the opportunity of owning it. (Matter of Urgency)
