For Sale Expired Names With Links (Questions)

Objective, buy names with linkpop and capitalize on traffic.

I get the gist of there are good links and bad links (linkfarms etc) but assuming the links are of acceptable quality (whatever that may be) how many links is a good number?

Like if you find an expired or expiring name with 20 links do you get interested and start researching it or does it need to be 200 or 2000?

Depends on where the links are coming from as you mentioned, but assuming we are talking good links then normally anything over 100 links (according to Altavista) is worth taking a look at.

You hit it right on the head when you mentioned link quality. I generally get interested when marketleap shows around 200 links, if it's around there I go to look at the specific links themselves. If they are link farms, or generally low quality pages, I might reconsider. If, however, the links are well placed and the site itself looks like it could pull some traffic, go for it. Remember that the registration fees are relatively low, and in order to break even on the name you need to make just 2 - 3 cents a day (assuming a general 8.95 reg fee).

You should also take into account the type of traffic the URL will be getting, if it's an old casino/finanical domain, it will be worth much more per visitor then a free jokes domains. There are certainly exceptions to the 200 link rule. I've picked up some horrid sounding domains with only 100 incoming links that have pulled some really good traffic, then again i've picked up some that I thought would do very well and they did rather poorly. Just do your homework before putting up the reg fee and you should be fine.

I'm cautious at throwing out numbers because they can vary so much, but I would generally say 30-50 uniques, if they are well placed, solid links.

Joe just to clarify, is that 200 links from one search engine or 200 links in total from Marketleap?

In general that's total, but I usually look for a good combo between altavista and google.. alltheweb is sometimes unreliable.

Quality of links depends on domain theme as well.
I purchase domains with links mostly not for resale, and my experience with "expired traffic" shows, for example:
For adult-related expired domain of general nature, at least 70 real links is required for me to consider snapping the domain.
For adult expired domain related to some "niche", 20-30 links should be OK.
For gambling-related expired domain, even 8-15 total links is very good (it pays for itself). On the other side, I would never buy adult domain with 8-15 links for anything higher cheap registrar price...

So it depends on how "expensive" are visitors in the theme of domain name. Avergage gambling sites do pay A LOT more per click at paid search engines, while average adult traffic costs less...

In general terms what do you then do with your traffic. Do you use just a single landing page or do you have specific pages for each domain?

Good advice Tony. Do you send your traffic to a general search page like domainsponsor provides, or do you only put targetted links on the pages? It seems like the latter would be more profitable, but it's more work. I'm considering doing that with my expired traffic sites that I don't sell rather then sending them to the generic domainsponsor page.

I didn't try domainsponsor yet... I look very closely to the links and send traffic to the closest "sponsor" - maybe hosting, online shop, adult paysite of appropriate niche, casino, whatever...
As I see it, "domainsponsor" actually receive its income from those "end-sponsors" and they give me 50% while I work directly with end-sponsor and keep 100%.
"Big Guys" like ultsearch may not be physically able to investigate each their domain individually... I can do so.
I'm working on a few _own_ linksites/catalogs of different topics for my domains though...

Unfortunately google blocks/drops sites
off their index relatively fast as soon as their
spiders found the domain not to resolve.

now, with the increased redemption period,
google will probably have dropped every site
before it expires.

And as long as Goolge remains the monopoly it will defiantly afect traffic to these expires...

Google maintains around 55% or more of traffic to most of my sites.. I'm sure thats pretty standard across the board.(if not more )

MSN has been getting strong past 6 months (amount of traffci it sends..) I would consider those links as substantial

well, i picked up one expired domain (3 letter but with a number) and it gets over 70,000 hits to main page... not bad

Dude is that hits or unique visits?
How many links does it have to get that many hits/visits?
