For IDN, is .com better than cctld?

Saw a lot of ppl selling IDN.net. Are they saving the .com for later use? IMO cctld should do better than .com. What do you think?

Dot Com is certainly the most speculated, and yes nobody are selling their favourites just yet, except one or two bigger players like myself that are trying to get a secondary market established.

The requirement for ccTLD is largely obviated as search relevance can be largely established on the basis of the language being used.

there is a saying that chinese users like .net more than .com.

taking a look at google.co.jp and google.cn and searching for native terms show that .jp and .cn are used alot.

Some interesting stats for a set of domains I own. They are a two character term with a Japanese overture score of 121,092.

.jp 4 visitors

I can't speak for everyone but to me it speaks volumes to what the Japanese type in. Not one of them is listed in a search engine. If all things are equal then this trend should continue with the release of IE7.

Yes, you are correct. While I do believe that there are .jp's that are getting signifigant traffic (I have a few) it's hard to properly frame what's getting most of the traffic without the .com, .net, .jp to study side-by-side.

A few of the luckier ones of us that were able to have their choice at which ext. for better generics 6 months ago did elect to grab all three (.jp, .com, .net) It would be excellent if they would share their findings as well. Mine hardly speak for the entire Japanese market.

Identical .jp and .com domains seem to get more traffic in the .com. But maybe that has to do with the phenomenon of the promotion of JAPANESE-WORD-IN-ROMAN.com's advertising themselves as IDN.com's in their banners and getting users to type in their names in real Japanese characters? Not sure.

There are ton's of ways if one was so inclined to learn.

From overture scores, to search results, to google zeitgeist, to bid tools, to talking to people from there.

If I own a term that appears on the google zeitgeist, has an overture score over 100k and has some nice bids on the overture bid tool, you can eliminate a lot of guess work. And if all things are equal should be worth some cash once the users are allowed to access it.

We aren't exactly dealing with an unknown equation here. They are people just like you and I. They have the same needs and wants that we do. They just use a different language to get there and using all of these things helps cut down on the "guesswork" of having to learn a new language.

Again, I registered complete crap my first two weeks in IDN with the exception of one or two terms. I really don't understand the hang up when people are doing the same thing in english were they own over 1000 junk names. It's a matter of jumping in and getting your feet wet and learning. And fear accomplishes nothing.

As for eastern, central european countries people are mostly typing IDN domains with their country ccTLD. I've got a plenty of them and .com goes after ccTLDs (having a little percent of ccTLD traffic). I see it as very natural.

Yes, unless you are from Russia of course. The only IDN that is support there is in use by the Kremlin.
