Sorry to hear that. In the future, make sure you backup your own bread and butter...

I was actually considering asking baygame to do work for me, or at least give me the instructions to make a vbulletin of mine friendlier. Now I know, for sure, that he's not getting access to do it himself, I'll hack it in on my own.

So, baygame, please pm me a price and payment info for instructions on how to hack my own forum.

Thanks,
MH

@Steen: First question is: Do you have hosting backups? If so, ask your hosting company to roll your site back to where it was on Oct 5th. Second: It would depend on what access rights you gave to baygame as to whether he indeed was able to back up the database. A full backup of your site with say, zip or gzip etc. would NOT include any mySQL database. Third: All is not necessarily lost. It may be that that the db structure can be repaired but you'll need a mySQL guy to check that out.

First thing to do is get in there and backup the site as it is now, AND the corrupt database. Let me know if you need help on either of those two things. Also, can you get into the admin control panel and switch off the forum with a 'maintenance' message?

Here's the commands (Linux) to backup your database (assumes you have a root directory accessible when you type 'cd /' (no apostrophes) on your box:

mkdir /dbasebackup

mysqldump --user databaseusername --password=databasepassword databasename >/dbasebackup/anybackupnameyoulike

Hope this helps.

I must explain my situation.

Baygame and I agreed on a price for him to write a mod that would make my Invisionboard more SE friendly.

Before he starts work, I remind him just in case to backup any file before you edit it, which I would think is a given regardless.

So while I am away (sleeping) the board is being worked on...

I wake up to several notices from admins and members that the forum is not working! Sure enough, www.buffononline.com/forum does not work. Immediately I PM baygame telling him this needs to be fixed ASAP. I couldn't believe that someone would work on a forum and after corrupting it, just leave it. The forum has over 100,000 posts, so it matters (to me and the members) when it is down!

The reply I get (a day later) via PM is: "you have some problems with your db so reinstall your forum"

This forum has many custom hacks, and website integrations, it's not just a matter of reinstalling; plus, I would loss the posts (over 100k).

And two days later, www.buffononline.com/forum

I don't know what I'm going to do :-(
first to tell i just uploaded .htaccess and then deleted it. i havent done anything to that.

since I am in the process of building over 20 forums now, and I have a few online, my suggestion is to get an external (not from your server provider) backup account and have all your data sent there on a dialy basis.
There are companies providing these services. I think it is very important.
Also, always get a second hard drive on your server and set it to backup everything from drive 1.
ideally, you also get a second server of your own and use it as a backup/failsafe mechanism.

I use that for every 30 sites or so.

so in total I'll need about 10 servers by the end of this year.
It realy is worth it in the long run, assuming you have high trafic and the data is important.

.htaccess is an invisible file and needs correct permissions to work.

I can't believe this guy.
In my post a bit ago in this thread, I said that I have vBulletin, and that I wanted to do the SEO hack, AND do it myself.
He PM's me "what hacks do you want" and after my reply, he writes: "i ll install seo hack price is 25 dollars if you want send me ftp and admincp details" (sic)

He dosen't get it.
He dosen't grasp the concept of Linux either if he dosent understand that .htaccess are system setting files and are hidden and require certain commands to view & edit.

You gotta be kidding me.
... access to my server? no way Jose

It's a blessing in disguise for me though. I'm skeptical if this hack would do me any good or end up getting my forum banned for cloaking or something to that effect.

I think I'll pass. Good luck to you guys.

In his defense, he does have a few communication skill problems and doesn't mean to come over brief and short. I know him quite well and he did the SEO vB hack for me and it works just fine. He also installed vBAdvanced for me plus some extra hacks etc. The secret here is never allow anyone anything other than ftp access and as far as admincp access to vB is concerned, he's OK with that and knows what he's doing.

Again, just back up EVERYTHING before having someone touch your server. Just relating my personal experience. This guy will also work with you in such a way that he'll do the work and YOU make the uploads and admincp entries. Just give him a break on the language problems.

He's a young guy out of Turkey trying to make a few bucks to help with University expenses.

and if you dont want me to install then you can write mod_rewrite+vbulletin to find results.

Your help is very much appreciated. My host does backups of day before, week before and than monthly. We tried all three together and each time stuff was still corrupt. I check in today, and it's fixed! I am so pleased (although it was down too long) that it's back up, but the posts are all from sept 7th and before. Which leads me to believe this is my hosts actions.

I would like to think that you didn't cause the problem, but I can't think of any other access that day (or within a few days).

I already pay a premium for good server management for my one server, it's not economical for me to buy another just for backups.

This is my experience, not telling people to not use his services.
