I would like to hear from any forum owners. I just started a College Student Forum and I'm not sure how to get it going. Anyone have any suggestions for creating a member base for a forum site?

Make the forum categories "interesting" and "post attractive" to the memberbase your trying to reach.

What's the 'theme' purpose of the community? Is it targeted to your member audience?

Print up biz cards.. flyers.. post them & hand them out at the local colleges.

Yes, promoting is the way to get people to visit your site.

Make sure your forum is search engine friendly, because not all forums are this by default (has to do with session id's in the urls). Trade links with other webmasters in the college scene so you get targeted traffic. Tell all your friends to sign up and post actively too...

post the url of the forum to give us an idea what its like
spietreser's right about search engines - youll probably need your forum to be hacked to be search engine friendly as by default most forums (vb included) dont get threads spidered

I'm no genius, but I'd be willing to bet that the url of his forum is www.CollegeRoom.com , which was in his sig for two of his posts in this thread.

for one - i would reduce the number of rooms - it isnt good having more rooms than members

start with 2 or 3 and then add more as the numbers increase
also - try and spice the site up a little and give it its own unique look
