Hey,

Say i register a site funforums.com for example (its not mine) and i want to start a forum similar to this in regards to design and so on. How do i do it? And do i need a hosting package?

Also, which is better *****forum.com or the plural *****forums.com?

Thanks, Mark

Thanks, but if you had to pick one? Also, what about the hosting?

Forum/forums/fora/forae, then there are the hyphenated versions and the .net and country codes. Better allow $1,000 or so for reg costs.

The other alternative is to use forum and register the name somewhere and send a C&D letter if someone else copies it. Is it possible to register a forum name like this?

Oh, man. It might be cheaper just to register every possible domain name available than to start paying lawyers. :D

At least it would be more fun...;)

Forum is probably best unless you get both since:
  • It's shorter
  • You probably will have a single forum with subtopics, not totally separate forums.
  • Singular is the more popular term
  • If you do get both, use the singular, redirect the plural

I run one on phpBB software that I really like and is best of all FREE and easy to install. This one is on vBulletin, and there are many other free and pay forum software titles out there. Most would agree that php based forums are better than older perl (cgi) based forum software. You will need a host that offers a database such as mySQL to run most forum software, as well as a good amount of disk space and bandwidth if it will be large.
