Gandi says they don't do REDEMPTION period renewals at any fee -- is this a violation of ICANN regulations?

Apparently yes. The whole concept of RGP (Redemption Grace Period) IS to allow registrants to "restore" domain names that would have been deleted, with a fee.

And according to Verisign's .com/.net registry operator report, Gandhi did allow restoration of expired domains in 2004, at least as late as April:

Gandi's response:

"If you ask the question to the Icann, you can know that it is not an obligation to provide this service.

So Gandi does not provide this service."

True or not?

Registrars are NOT obligated to provide the service. It seems it would be in their best interest to do so though.

You can renew a domain around 1 month after expiration at Gandi.
It is just a question of semantics here : they simply do not call this "redemption period".

They are not that bad IMO.
Used them several times, never had a problem.

Would not say the same with Register.it :-/

They don't even have an automated update system -- it's done through paper submission process -- that's ridiculous -- it's almost 2005.

Gandi won't allow REDEMPTION renewals for one reason, plain and simple: they're partnered with a backorder service and want to make money from that, as opposed to serving their customers.

Scandalous.
