Go Daddy charges $9.95 for checking your WHOIS info

Nope, it's not a mistake. You read the title right.

This has been discussed thoroughly in another forum.

This isn't mean to bash Go Daddy. I'm rather hoping to inform you guys about
this in as many forums as possible (I realize it's "spamming" but it's just to
notify, nothing more).

I hate to say this but it's another reason why I'm moving out of there...

You mean GoDaddy "fines" for invalid /incorrect whois info right?

From the WHT thread, it appears that when someone reports a GD-held domain has inaccurate whois info, GD charges the domain holder $9.95 for processing the report, whether the whois turns out to be accurate or not.

Totally outrageous, if true.

Update: someone from Go Daddy replied to the thread. Here's a copy:

If we receive an ICANN complaint of invalid WHOIS information, and our investigation shows that all or part of the required information is missing or invalid, we send a warning to the registrant of the domain. They then have 5 days to respond or update the information so that it is all accurate.

In this case, we received a notification from ICANN because the original WHOIS for this domain name contained all zero's for the phone number. We sent a warning and asked the registrant to update the information. He then updated the Registrant phone number only to a number that did not include an area code. There were no changes made to the Administrative or Technical contacts following the initial warning.

At that point, we charged the adminisrative fee accordingly. Only after this was done was the WHOIS information for the domain in question updated to it's current form.

Please note that the initial warning sent in this case is seperate from the general reminders that have been sent out in the last 2 days. ICANN requires all accredited registrars to send annual reminders to domain registrants. If there is a problem with your domain name's contact information, you will be sent an official warning at that time.

You are required to maintain correct whois information under the terms of your domain registration, if you fail to do this you can have your domain seized. Maybe you are fortunate merely to have only had to pay an administration charge for them being required to perform work due to your negligence, rather than losing your domain - after all don't we all get annual reminders that correct whois is necessary?

Any company that tries to sell you so many extraneous services (most of them grossly overpriced) when you attempt to register a domain, and runs devious promotions ought to be avoided. Caveat emptor!

You need to understand that GoDaddy charges for looking into it. It doesn't matter if you have the correct information or not. If they look into it, they charge you $9.95. Or 'can' charge you "a reasonable amount."

It happened to me. Someone reported a domain I own as having false information.

Godaddy emailed and later telephoned to the information that was in the whois. Funny thing is, they emailed me and telephoned me. But, still charged me $9.95.

I'm sorry. That's not right. And I have no more domains at Godaddy.

Nobody should.

I'm definitely moving all my names away from GD now.

edit- and I just realized that this is old news. Dunno how I didn't see this...
