...other than vBulletin!?

I can't afford the $160 for a owned licence, so I'm thinking about switching to one of the free bulletin boards like phpBB or IPB.

Does anyone know if there are version of the popular mods and hacks like Forum $'s (uCash) or Online Games available for any of these boards?

yes there are similar hacks for both

I'd recommend saving for vBulletin. It's the best in it's price range. To be honest I haven't come across a forum I liked better in ANY price range.

Agreed. They're not still "leasing"? I've leased for a while. I'm not sure if its "lease to own", but it's pretty cool. Another option is to start with phpBB, and later import your forum into vBulletin when you can afford it, later.

I just varified it with vBulletin, and if you get a leased you can (Only in the first 30 days) upgrade to a owned for only 85$ more !

Whatever you do, Nexus has a good point. Make sure you pick a forum software that can be imported to vbulletin later on. Most can, but just be sure to check first.

I found phpbbfm-dot-com earlier this month. Not using it, but a fully-modded version of PHPBB...

If you don't have a host, use dk3.com as a last option thingy :)

IPB or InvisionBoard is no longer free!

$199 for owned and $69.99 for one year license.

For that price, I would choose vB over IB, though I do have 3 IB licenses.

The one year license of IPB can be compared to the OWNED license of vB.
You do not have to remove the software after the year is up, it is not leased.

IPB is cheaper.

phpbbfm seems good, thanks for the link..!!

I'm not using it, but it seems to take the pain of making and maintaining mods out of the equation. Especially for those of us who are more concerned with developing sites and traffic versus upgrading software all the time.
