On the occasion, I have been pleasantly surprised that a backorder placed years earlier had finally been fulfilled, the domain having been abandoned after a few years

quite often the opposite is what happens. you did want to get the domain on a backorder but the registrar auctioned it off before and someone else won it. so they get the name and not you.
happy to see in biggie's situation that happening suited him just fine.
