grace period for expired names

names dropping 24 hours after expiry date why????????
Hi folks

Please can someone tell me when my name that had a expiry date of 09/28/2002 was registered by someone else 24 hours later. I was not given any grace period. Can anyone confirm there is and what the grace period is. I have names registered with enom/tucows and they give me at least a couple of weeks. But stargate just decide to let the name drop 24 hours after the expiry date.If i have taken for a sucker is there any legal avenue i can go down?

???????????????.com expires on 9/28/2002. Failure to register ??????????????.com prior to the expiration date of 9/28/2002, will result in the loss of the domain name.

I then do a whois and see this.

I don't think that you have any legal recourse. While it is customary to give a grace period after the expiration, it is not a requirement.

Oops, I see now that it was Stargate. Not much experience with them, as the only times I had names there, I transferred well in advance to OpenSRS, my main registrar.

Registrars are not required to give a grace period, but as morel points out it is customary. I know eNom is another that gives VERY little grace time. I haev lost a couple there because of that. There is no legal recourse.

ICANN is trying to mandate a 30 day grace period, but I have yet to hear anything about that.

The mandatory grace period has been approved by ICANN, but the means to roll it out is being debated and discussed. There are a number of registrars who are pleading hardship to roll it out immediately. It will be implemented before the WLS goes live however, so it's coming.

Stargate is very inconsistent when it comes to dropping their
expired names.

I have seen them drop names one day after expiration and
also seen names that expired a year ago that have not dropped.

Makes no sense to me but it would be nice if they gave you at least a 30 day window to renew...
