Great Information on .us Name Regs

Someone sent me this link today. It is a snapshot and analysis of the way .us registrations have progressed.

The study was done by Berkman Center for Internet & Society, Harvard Law School

This snapshot is as of 8/13/02, fairly recent.

307k + .us registrations were analyzed from a zone transfer file.

This is a scholarly and in depth study of trends for the .us TLD that are similar to other TLD registrations.

My interpretation is that there are BIG players in the name game, and then there is everyone else. The top 10 owners have about 15k names. Average is 41 names per registrant, out of 3460 different registrants.

Defensive TM protective registrations and typo regs account for an interesting piece of .us regs. Amazon regged many typo names, and Johnson & Johnson regged 700+ TM names.

A concern for the author was the 21,639 registrations with ALL WHOIS contact information outside the US.

The registrars are broken down, and GoDaddy is at the top, both before and after sunrise, with 18% of the market.

thats been out a while now DNSkid.. Ben E/.s work basically a rehash of his work on .Biz /info
always with the same angle of trying to show all the "bad" registrations" ..

Which is fine.. but the bottom line is revenues and they arent going to keep adding roadblocks to register a domain and choke off the revenue supply..

all the "tools" are in place to handle TM disputes and usDrp dispute is set up too handle just about any other "bad" registrations" .. like these in his "conclusion"

The same old ..Oh no people are registering sex names and buying hundrds of names..

Ben is registered here and I for one would certainly love to hear why he always goes down this path?

I love the actually study part but he always has to inject this conservative watchdog bigbrother attitude in.

bid - It sounds like he might be suggesting off-shore porn regs are not what the .us cc TLD was intended for.

There are people that might agree with that in principle, but being a market-driven commodity, names will go to who has the resources to purchase them.

Enforcement of the US resident / presence requirement is almost impossible, so why hammer on it? The regs he mentions may or may not be in violation, they just seem to fit a pattern.

There are always people that will point out how things should be, I was glad to see all the other good info in this study.

I also couldn't believe all the junk names people regged. If someone gets there first, and regs a 30 letter hyphenated name, does that mean they have won?
